About Time!

I finally got around to laying out the site. I installed WordPress nearly 3 years ago, laid out the theme, and then did nothing with it. Something always seems to get in the way, whether its working stuff at home or someone else’s technical projects.

For those that are curious, this is a standard WordPress installation with a customized theme and a couple of simple plugins. I set this up mainly so I could have a website on the domain I use for email, and because people that know me always harass me about not having my own site laid out. Sort of like the mechanic that never fixes his own car I guess.

For the more technical among the readers here is a bit more info about the install:

  • Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS, originally 18.04 LTS and recently upgraded
  • Tyan S4980 Motherboard with quad AMD processors (16 cores total) and 32 gigs of RAM. A bit of overkill but there is plenty of space on this machine to host other things.
  • ISPConfig installed as a hosting control panel. I tend not to use stuff like this as a general rule, but most machines I work on are tied to a single company or task. If I decide to add other sites later, either my own or hosted for someone else, this makes it much easier to setup. I may write some articles on ISPConfig in the near future.
  • Let’s Encrypt free SSL certificates. This is generally pretty easy to install on the average Linux box, but it was truly painless via the ISPConfig interface. Install the certbot package via apt-get and then click a single box for each site you want protected with SSL.
  • Zimbra Open Source email platform. This is installed on a different machine. ISPConfig also has email capability and I have used it, but I prefer Zimbra.
